The Ethereum project was launched in 2015 to create decentralized applications based on "smart contracts". Ether (ETH) is the currency unit within the system, as well as a new generation cryptocurrency. In 2016 Ether reached a record high market capitalization compared to other alternative digital currencies – over $1 billion. This is now the second popular cryptocurrency after Bitcoin. During the hard fork in July 2016, the Ethereum community split into two blockchains – Ethereum (ETH) and Ethereum Classic (ETC).
